On 19th September 2021, a group of VERITASians visited the Pantai Cermin beach in Port Dickson for a beach cleaning activity and mangrove sapling collection. ECOMy, an NGO working on sustainable ecotourism in the region led by Andrew Sebastian, assisted the Veritas team. The team managed to fill 16 large bags with beach debris from 1.5 km of shoreline within an hour.
In Malaysia, over 50 per cent of total beach debris comes from recreational activities like picnics, festivals, sporting events and beach outings. Litter washed from streets, parking lots and storm drains as well as smoking-related activity also contribute to this category.
