DISCIPLINES
Positioned beside the historic Tan Sri Dato Haji Hassan Yunos Stadium in Larkin, Johor, the new indoor stadium is envisioned as a contemporary civic anchor within a vibrant sporting district. Designed for 7,000 spectators, the venue accommodates a wide spectrum of indoor sports from badminton and sepak takraw to basketball and multi-purpose event formats.
ARCHITECTURE
The building’s form is derived directly from the geometry of its seating bowl—a hybrid between square and circle that delivers optimal sightlines while efficiently organizing the supporting programme around it. This rational, performance-driven configuration shapes the stadium’s compact massing and clear internal circulation, ensuring that the spectator experience remains central to the architectural intent.
The façade adopts a repeating motif inspired by traditional Johorean timber-house ornamentation. Interpreted through contemporary fabrication techniques and modern materials, this pattern becomes a defining architectural layer, giving the stadium a distinctive local identity. By merging visual heritage with current construction methods, the design strengthens cultural resonance without resorting to literal representation. These spatial, cultural, and functional strategies collectively position the stadium as a key venue for the SUKMA 2020 Games and as a long-term civic landmark for Johor.
