DISCIPLINES
Set along Shah Alam’s central recreational belt, the PKNS Headquarters occupies a 4.6-acre site fronting Tasik Tengah, where urban life meets a lush lakeside landscape. Conceived as both an administrative centre and a civic refuge, the building positions PKNS as a leader in future-forward, environmentally attuned architecture.
ARCHITECTURE
The headquarters is organized as four slender office blocks—ranging from four to eight storeys and between 10 and 15 meters in width—gathered beneath a single, sweeping green roof. This unifying roof form rises organically from the landscape, transforming the building into an extension of its lakeside terrain. From the outside, the structure reads as an inhabited landform: a terraced, planted surface that restores more greenery than what the development displaces. The ascending green roof serves as an accessible public park, drawing visitors upward to panoramic views of the man-made lake.
As one moves through the building, the experience is defined by openness, visual permeability and an ever-present connection to nature. Courtyards are carved between the blocks, bringing in ventilation and daylight deep into the interior via louvered skylights embedded in the roofscape. The courtyards act as breathing spaces that link work environments with the surrounding parkland, while shaded walkways, terraces and landscaped pockets encourage a calm, campus-like rhythm. By integrating workplace, landscape and public amenity, the headquarters becomes a hybrid civic environment—part office, part urban sanctuary.
The project’s environmental ambition is underpinned by a rigorous sustainability strategy. A significant portion of cooling demand is met through a solar-driven refrigeration system. Complemented by natural daylighting strategies, rainwater harvesting and wastewater recycling, the building operates at an energy intensity of 79 kWh/m²/year, achieving a 65% reduction compared to typical Malaysian commercial buildings.
These outcomes have earned the PKNS Headquarters LEED Platinum certification and two GBI Platinum ratings for its office and retail components, along with the ASEAN Energy Award in 2018 for the most environmentally sustainable large office building in the region.
