DISCIPLINES
The PETRONAS Leadership Centre is a purpose-built corporate campus where learning, sustainability and wellness converge and take center stage. From flexible multi-module learning rooms and breakout spaces to amphitheatres and strategic touchdown zones, its unique design blurs the boundaries between indoor learning spaces and the natural environment. This approach creates shared spaces that invite PETRONAS talents to learn, network and collaborate.
ARCHITECTURE
The design by VERITAS conceived a sinuous four-storey building at the centre of a 35-acre estate adjacent to PLC’s existing campus. Nestled within heavily landscaped grounds, the facility has become a centre of learning excellence, intellectual dialogue and community — a tranquil oasis detached from urban hustle and bustle.
The campus’s sinuous form represents the concept of knowledge being fluid, flowing and ever-growing. The concept of water ripples – where small actions reverberate to create a larger impact – inspires a form that subtly resonates with PETRONAS’ commitment to sustainability.
Defining the building’s curved form is the Spine, the principal artery and circulation route that links together all of PLC’s various components. Its triple-height volume connects spaces at ground level and via overhead pedestrian bridges, allowing seamless and unhindered passage from one area to the next.
At the centre of the design lies the 360, a venue whose groundbreaking technology and versatility manifests PETRONAS’ progressive direction and PLC’s innovative spirit in one iconic form. The 360’s chameleonic attribute is made possible by its dynamic LED panel array, capable of creating digitally immersive environments and transforming the hall into a naturally illuminated gallery-type space through a 90-degree automated rotation of each panel.
INTERIORS
Enveloped by a sinuous four-storey green building, the interior has been thoughtfully designed to support PETRONAS’ commitment to innovation, sustainability and community. The foundation of PLC’s design approach lies in the organisational strategy of the entire building.
Supporting an agile work environment, the workspaces at PLC are designed for flexibility and productivity. Side-by-side learning rooms can be combined by retracting automated partitions into the ceiling space. The system confers the desired spatial flexibility, providing barrierless layouts and freedom of configuration.
These formal spaces are supported by breakout lounges, amphitheatres, and touchdown zones that encourage informal collaboration and networking. Open workspaces with mobile furnishings and integrated discussion areas, replace tall cubicles, fostering a more agile, people-centric working environment.
From geology-inspired carpet patterns to textured walls, timber finishes and bronze accents, the Residential block invokes the essence of a private retreat, designed to make each stay pleasurable and restorative. Through subtle variations in layout, colour and material selections, each room offers guests a distinctive and personalized, yet premium hospitality, experience.
Overall, warm material palettes and thoughtful spatial zoning blur the boundaries between indoor areas and the surrounding landscape, to create a dynamic environment that encourages collaboration and community-building, reflecting PETRONAS’ progressive and people-centric work culture.
LANDSCAPE
The courtyard design at PLC fuses aesthetic quality and functional purpose, creating a visually compelling and practical design. The grounds of PLC extend the classroom experience into this outdoor setting that balances social and recreational performance. The planting beds, ornamental trees, shrubs and water bodies form a biophilic playground, a space of discovery for the senses as guests stroll along pathways.
A landmark feature of the campus is the four-acre man-made lake and stream that weave through and around the building. These water features play a critical role in reducing heat island effect by lowering ambient air temperature, while becoming a supporting environment for the wildlife. Aquatic plants help purify these water bodies by absorbing pollutants such as nitrogen and phosphorus while also oxygenating the water. An aquatic realm, teeming with species of fish and other organisms, is a significant step in strengthening the campus’ ecology, further boosting local biodiversity.
PLANNING
VERITAS played a pivotal role in securing planning application approval for a landmark education and innovation facility within a 35-acre estate adjacent to the PETRONAS Leadership Centre (PLC).
Our services for this project encompassed comprehensive planning advisory and coordination with local authorities to ensure compliance with all statutory requirements and guidelines. We facilitated land use zoning validation, site compatibility assessments, and the preparation of key planning documents, including layout plans, development impact assessments, and design justifications.
The cascading building form, responding directly to the project’s physical demands, introduces a new skyline to the existing flat greenfield site.
ENVIRONMENT
The Petronas Leadership Centre (PLC), a three-story campus with educational, recreational and hospitality spaces, has earned both the GBI Platinum Rating and LEED Platinum Rating. The cascading building form responds directly to the project’s topographical and environmental demands with a design that integrates seamlessly with its natural setting. Additionally, the campus also sets a distinctive profile at a previously underdeveloped flat greenfield site. It is intentionally designed to foster social collaboration and enhance future learning experiences through innovative spaces, supporting Petronas’ corporate values and work culture.
Key Sustainable Features:
- Curved building forms that create the wind tunnel effect for passive cooling.
- North-south facing building facades providing shading while allowing natural light.
- Rainwater harvesting system and grey water recycling implemented for non-potable uses.
- Composting and recycling initiatives embedded into operations.
- High SRI (Solar Reflectance Index) hardscape material & man-made lake for heat island effect reduction
- Provide sub-metering for energy use ≥ 100kVA
